  • Bad Music and Raw “Suckage”

Last Saturday I took a trip to the New York Renaissance Faire. I know I am easily amused but I enjoyed the irony of the statement “We have power! Open this Weekend!” displayed on their web site. Yep, the Blackout sucked but at least it only lasted 6 hours for me.

In other news… One of my least favorite “features” of modern web browsers is exploitable for Internet Explorer users: In MSBlast’s wake, a DirectX threat. Thats right kids… you too can get exploited by a background MIDI file!

I spent a good three plus hours today helping out patching the student labs at work against MSBlast and related fun. Dealing with Windows workstations, which thankfully isn’t normally part of my job, reminds me of how damn useful ssh and real package managers like rpm are. I could have patched a couple dozen UNIX or Linux machines in the time it took me to do 6 windows machines without using any scripting at all. (Of course I didn’t counting the time spent under computer desks disabling Centurian Guard… a product idea that is foreign to UNIX and Macintosh workstation administrators for very good reasons…)

Speaking of suckage a paralegal maintains a great blog discussing the actual legal facts behind the whole SCO vs Linux thing called GrokLaw. She doesn’t pretend to be a lawyer but does a great job of ripping apart legal documents, doing research into the latest SCO sewage releases, etc. At this point she probably knows more about the SCO vs IBM case then SCO does. Highly recommended.

An interesting social phenomenon being enabled by modern technology:

The seeming spontaneous forming of mobs of people who cover a wide spectrum of society and have little in common… created through online associations, instant communication, and a highly mobile population. Or rather… Damn Cool.

Nerevarine Prophecies Fulfilled!

I finally finished the main quest in Morrowind after about 80 or so hours of playtime. Its probably more then that but I really don’t want to think about it. I found about half the main quest fun and the other half tedious. I ended up resorting to a walkthrough during the “Make 15,000 Trips Around The World And Get Everyone To Name You Whatever” part just so I could get it over with.

The final boss of the quest, Dagoth Ur, was challenging and fun. At first I feared my extra time spent dicking around in the world and getting “uber loot” would mean this part, like many other parts, would be a tad on the easy side. Luckily it took a good 5 tries before I figured out I had to swallow health potions like a french man swallows bacteria piss while stabbing a magical heart with an overglorified letter opener. Hell, I was more then glad to see the fucker die… He just would not shut up!

I found finishing the quest very satisfying. I found it about as satisfying as getting my bard to lvl 50 on DAOC. Except maybe with Morrowind my character isn’t gimp and best played as a bot.

So in summary… I have no life, but at least I found a good (fun!) away to piss away some time. I guess I’ll have to go work on one of the expansion packs now (woo… warewolves!) while waiting for the next carebear fantasy MMORPG to come out.

  • Choices… Choices…

Hmm… So many great bumper stickers to choose from at Irregular Times.

Here are a couple of the better ones I’m thinking of buying:

    Bush Lied People Died

No one Died When Clinton Lied

    What Else is Bush Hiding?

According to Tom Tomorrow’s site there is a bumper sticker going around with the text “Any Other Whore In 2004“. A quick trip to google turns up nothing but I guess I could always order a custom bumper sticker from the fine folks at Cafe Press.
